Educational Studies and Science
The B.A. in Educational Studies and Science teaches you the content knowledge related to secondary school science. It does not include a supervised teaching practicum in a real classroom and therefore does not meet the requirements for initial teacher licensure. The program is for individuals who, for various reasons, want the academic knowledge that relates to teaching science at the middle and/or high school level but who cannot or do not want to participate in a supervised real classroom practicum. (The B.A. in Science, which includes the practicum, is the normal program for those seeking licensure.)

WGU is the only online teacher education institution in the nation to receive NCATE accreditation.

A Program Overview
The program consists of seven to eight domains of knowledge including WGU competency assessments and mentoring. The seven to eight domains of study are:
Lower-Division Domains:
Language and Communication Skills
Collegiate Level Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills
General Education Distribution
Quantitative Literacy Skills
General Science Content

Upper-Division Domains:
Foundations of Teaching
Effective Teaching Practices (Science)

And, for the high school concentration, choose one of the following:
Interdisciplinary Science Content (Biological Sciences)
Interdisciplinary Science Content (Geosciences)

Tuition That's Affordable
WGU is a non-profit university with affordable tuition. Tuition for this degree is just $2,890 per 6-month term or just $5,780 per year. This is less than HALF what other reputable online universities typically charge. (Other schools charge as much as $300-$400 per credit, which can ultimately cost over $30,000 for a 4-year degree.)

Time Required to Complete the Program

Becoming a Certified Teacher
This program is not designed to prepare students for initial certification in any U.S. state because it does not include the in-classroom teaching practicum that is required for regular certification. Other initial licensure programs at WGU are better suited for most individuals who want to become licensed K-12 teachers. This program is for individuals who, for various reasons, want to acquire academic knowledge related to elementary level teaching, but do not want an educational program that leads to initial licensure.
