WGU Texas, Leander ISD Sign Partnership to Make Higher Education More Accessible

Partnership streamlines process for district employees to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees

LEANDER – WGU Texas and Leander ISD (LISD) launched a new partnership agreement to create seamless transfer pathways for LISD employees who want to earn their bachelor’s or master’s degree with WGU Texas.  

“WGU Texas is excited to assist school district employees achieve their higher education and career goals,” said Linda Battles, Regional Vice President and WGU Texas Chancellor. “Our partnership with Leander ISD will provide employees with individualized, competency-based learning that allows them the flexibility to earn their degree at their own pace while juggling work and family responsibilities.”

Located in Williamson and Travis Counties, LISD educates over 42,000 students at its 44 campuses and employs more than 2,750 teachers and staff. LISD works closely with higher education institutions to motivate everyone in the community to continue their education. 

“The partnership with WGU Texas offers a pathway for employees to pursue careers as an educator as well as professional development pathways for career advancement and supports our efforts to ‘grow our own’” said Karie Lynn McSpadden, Chief Human Resource Officer, Leander ISD.   

Through the agreement with WGU Texas, LISD employees may select among more than 60 accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in K-12 teaching, information technology, business, and health professions. Transfer students also receive special benefits including:

  • Exclusive partner scholarships, valued at up to $2,500,  
  • Access to more than 30 additional scholarships and financial aid, 
  • Military benefits for qualified applicants, 
  • Access to career services and alumni events and activities, and
  • Comprehensive, seamless transfer policy. 

WGU Texas’ current enrollment is 13,750 students with students enrolled in 233 of the state’s 254 counties, of which 9 percent reside in Travis and Williamson Counties. 24 Leander ISD employees currently attend WGU Texas. Eighty percent of WGU Texas students hold full-and part-time jobs.
