By Anchal Nayyar

The Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Services (BSHHS) program from the Michael O. Leavitt School of Health (LSH) at Western Governors University (WGU) was recently featured among Forbes list of “Best Online Health Science Degrees of 2023” in the United States. The decision came after careful evaluation of the program in various categories including student outcomes, student experience, affordability, credibility, and application process.

“We are thrilled at the recognition we’ve just received. The degree is designed keeping in mind the contemporary health landscape to prepare students in various disciplines like health information, community health, value-based care, and integrated change management; all geared toward patient-centered holistic care,” said Stephanie LaPuma, LSH academic director and associate dean. “Receiving acknowledgment from Forbes is a testament to our program’s curriculum and consistency.”

Backed with flexibility and affordability owing to the university’s competency-based model, the 35 courses in the program offer students extensive theorical understanding as well as realistic experiences via virtual simulation. The capstone project component that marks the culmination of the program is rooted in field experience and in-depth practical applications for improved conceptual understanding.

“It is such an honor to be recognized by Forbes. We have designed this program to prepare all types of learners for a variety of positions in both health and human services. The program ensures learners graduate with skills including critical thinking and problem-solving, as well as communications, leadership, team dynamics, and professional presence,” said Jessica Fisher, LSH department chair. “This honorable recognition further solidifies WGU’s mission to change lives for the better by creating pathways to opportunity.”

More than 1,700 have enrolled in the BSHHS program since it launched in February 2023. Advancing the university’s principle of meeting students where they are to expand access and enhance inclusivity, this program is available throughout the year and can be fully completed online.
