Nashville Nurse Surprised with Tenn-k Scholarship

Mar 6, 2018

WGU Tennessee is winding down its biggest scholarship campaign of the year, known as Tenn-K. The deadline to apply is March 15, so don’t delay!

Some of this year’s Tenn-K recipients won’t be notified until after the deadline that they’re receiving the scholarship. Others, such as TriStar Summit nurse Melody Johnson, are receiving the good news ahead of March 15.

Melody has an associate degree, but delayed pursuing her bachelor’s degree while her three children were growing up. Unfortunately, Melody’s academic setback was compounded when one of her children was diagnosed with cancer as a young adult, and her hopes of earning a bachelor’s degree got pushed back even further.

Melody’s story has a happy ending, though. After her son beat cancer, she decided the time was right to return to school to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She enrolled in WGU Tennessee’s program last fall, and applied for the Tenn-K Scholarship shortly after starting her first term.

On Jan. 18, Melody learned — via a surprise announcement in front of her colleagues — that she was named a recipient of the $10,000 scholarship, which will go a long way in helping complete her educational goals.

We were able to see Melody’s excitement when we surprised her with the Tenn-K Scholarship right as she was getting off her shift at TriStar Summit Medical Center. Check out the WSMV-TV clip above to see Melody’s reaction!

If you or someone you know is interested in going back to school, but worried about the cost, WGU Tennessee can help! With more than $1.5 million awarded in scholarship funding to Tennesseans since 2013, on top of an already affordable tuition of approximately $6,500 per year, WGU Tennessee strives to eliminate the financial barriers preventing students from achieving their educational goals.

Up to 10 Tennesseans will receive the Tenn-K Scholarship this year. Visit https://tennessee.wgu.edu/tennk to learn more and apply for the scholarship by March 15, 2018.
