Dr. Harold Lee Martin Sr. Joins WGU Board

Today, Western Governors University (WGU) is pleased to announce that Dr. Harold Lee Martin Sr., chancellor emeritus at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has joined the WGU Board as its newest trustee.  

Dr. Martin, the longest-serving chancellor in the University of North Carolina System, led North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) from 2009 until his retirement in 2024. As the university’s first alumnus chancellor, he spearheaded transformative initiatives that elevated N.C. A&T’s standing as a top-tier doctoral research institution and the nation’s largest historically Black college/university (HBCU). His leadership drove strategic growth in research, academic excellence, and endowment expansion while fostering impactful community and industry partnerships.

A nationally recognized education and business leader, Dr. Martin has received numerous accolades, including the Education Leadership Award from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and recognition as America’s most influential HBCU leader by HBCU Digest. His extensive service on boards such as the American Council on Education and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities underscores his commitment to advancing higher education.

Joe Fuller, chair of WGU’s Board of Trustees, a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School and co-director of the school’s Managing the Future of Work project, remarked, "We are delighted to have Dr. Harold Lee Martin Sr. join the board of trustees, bringing his wealth of experience and business acumen. His deep commitment to education and strategic insight will be instrumental in shaping the future of our institution."
