Turning Challenges into Opportunities: My Journey as a WGU Nursing Student

By Brittany Pichon, WGU BSN Student
Embarking on a journey to pursue a nursing degree is no small feat. For me, it’s been a transformative experience shaped by personal challenges, hard work and the unwavering desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
As a mother, my path to becoming a nurse began in an unexpected and profoundly emotional place: the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). My daughter was born prematurely, and I spent two months at her side in a world of beeping monitors, tangled tubes and the constant mix of fear and hope. The NICU was where every tiny milestone felt like a victory and every minor setback was a challenge. During this time, I witnessed firsthand the compassion, expertise and resilience of the nurses who cared for her—and me as a scared first-time mom.
During those long nights by her incubator, I asked myself a life-changing question: Could I do this? Could I turn my experience as a NICU mom into a calling to help other families the way these nurses helped mine? With that thought, my journey to becoming a nurse began.
Discovering WGU: A Path That Fits
Deciding to pursue nursing as a career was one thing; finding a program that worked for me as a working mom was another challenge entirely. I explored countless options, attended informational sessions, and faced the same advice repeatedly: “You’ll need a strong support system for your daughter.” Many programs required a rigid schedule or demanded sacrifices that didn’t align with my responsibilities.
Just when I felt like I might have to put my dream on hold, I discovered Western Governors University (WGU). Initially, I was skeptical about an online nursing program. How could something so flexible and accessible provide the quality education I needed? But now, as I near the completion of my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Prelicensure) program from the Michael O. Leavitt School of Health, I can confidently say that WGU has exceeded my expectations.
WGU’s unique approach to education has allowed me to balance being a full-time mom, worker, and student. The flexibility to set my schedule has been essential, enabling me to pursue my degree without sacrificing my family or my job. At WGU, earning a degree isn’t just about academics; it’s about purpose. It’s about turning aspirations into realities and building an achievable and meaningful future.
From Theory to Practice: The Power of Hands-On Learning
One of the most memorable milestones in my journey at WGU was stepping into the WGU Clinical Learning and Simulation Center for the first time. Walking through those doors and putting on my blue scrubs felt like a full-circle moment. It wasn’t just a lab; it was a space to bridge the gap between theory and practice, where I could test my knowledge, make mistakes, and grow into the kind of nurse I aspired to be.
Being in the lab was both humbling and empowering. Surrounded by peers who shared my dedication and drive, I found a sense of community and motivation. Together, we navigated the challenges of learning new skills, always considering the patients we would one day serve. Each moment in the lab reminded me of the sacrifices, late-night study sessions and moments of self-doubt that had brought me to this point.
Lessons Learned and a Vision for the Future
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve learned that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar territory. Feeling apprehensive when facing new challenges is normal, but those moments build resilience and confidence. My time at WGU has taught me to believe in myself, embrace the process, and celebrate every step forward—no matter how small.
As I near the finish line of my program, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities WGU provided. The university’s commitment to flexibility, innovation, and student success has shaped my education and my outlook on what’s possible. For me, earning my degree is more than personal achievement; it’s about showing my daughter, family and myself that hard work and determination can make even the biggest dreams come true.
To those considering a similar path, know this: the road may be challenging, but it’s also gratifying. The impossible can become your reality with the right tools, support, and mindset. That reality is becoming a NICU nurse and giving back to families in their most vulnerable moments—just as others once did for me.
Looking Ahead
As I prepare to graduate, I’m excited about the future of nursing education at WGU. The expansion of the WGU Clinical Learning and Simulation Center in Houston represents more than just growth; it’s a testament to WGU’s dedication to empowering students and shaping the future of healthcare. I’m proud to be part of this journey and look forward to seeing how it will continue to inspire and transform lives.
To all current and prospective students: Keep pushing forward. Your dreams are worth the effort, and your story is just beginning.
